A new identity to vágóhíd street

Vágóhíd Street is located in the ’rust belt’ of Budapest. Local urban fabric has gone through many changes that transformed the route primarily serving industrial activities into a vehicle-oriented bypass to a dense residential area – leaving the street with many identities and a heavy domination of vehicle traffic.

Following the inquiry of local inhabitants our multidisciplinary team came up with a solution that celebrates the coexistence of these many identities. It is a harmony of varied open spaces in the 3 different sections of the street. By keeping the collector road role but reducing through traffic and kerbside parking and slicing up the 30 m wide asphalt the street was able to accomodate a linear greenery with 111 new trees, an accessible sidewalk with intermittent social hubs on strategic locations and foremost, an separate safe cycle path with all necessary service elements, and a community cycle-sharing station.

We believe that this redistribution of the urban space (cross section) that truly reflects the inhabitants needs’ is the best way to create a cherished neighborhood, while we did not underestimate the power of aesthetics either - selecting harmonizing street furniture set and a coherent planting plan was also a priority.

The architecture of the street gone through many changes to became a residental area but keeping many elements of the previous functions it still remains heterogen.
